Basic Knowledge of “DENKAISUI” Electrolyzed Water

  • Strongly acidic “DENKAISUI” electrolyzed water and strongly alkaline “DENKAISUI” electrolyzed water are produced through the process of electrolysis.

“DENKAISUI” electrolyzed water is produced from tap water (H2O) and salt (NaCl) through the process of electrolysis in a diaphragm electrolytic cell. Strongly acidic electrolyzed water, which contains hypochlorous acid (HOCl) as a major active ingredient, is produced at the anode of the electrode. It shows such physical properties as the effective chlorine concentration of 20 to 60ppm, the pH value of 2.2 to 2.7 and the oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of +1,100mV or more. It has a strong bactericidal effect and for example, the strongly acidic electrolyzed water with the effective chlorine concentration of 40 ppm, is proved to be about 25 times as powerful in bactericidal activity as the sodium hypochlorite of 0.1% (1,000ppm), the same chlorine based disinfectant.

Strongly alkaline electrolyzed water is produced as a by-product at the cathode side of the electrode while strongly acidic electrolyzed water is produced at the same time.
It has a pH greater than 10.0 and its ORP is less than -800mV. Containing a trace amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), it has emulsification properties to fat and oils and has the ability to dissolve proteins (high cleansing power).

Strong Bactericidal Effects

Strongly acidic electrolyzed water contains hypochlorous acid (HOCl), which is produced via electrolysis of a NaCl solution and has a strong bactericidal effect. As a result of physicochemical analysis (ESR), it is proved that hydroxyl radical (・OH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are generated in the strongly acidic electrolyzed water. It is interesting to know that these chemical species are the same as those which are generated by neutrophil in the human body (Neutrophils, a type of white blood cells, play a role in preventing infection by englobing and sterilizing bacteria that invade the human body.). (Fig.1)

A protein and nucleic acid analysis and a microscopic observation have revealed that the surfaces, DNA or RNA inside or protein of those bacteria are damaged when they are treated by the strongly acidic electrolyzed water. It was found, also, that the sulfur-containing methionine (a kind of amino acid) is oxidized. This phenomenon is based on the action of hydroxyl radical.

Strongly acidic electrolyzed water shows fast-acting bactericidal effects on a wide variety of pathogens including drug-resistant bacteria such as MRSA and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and food poisoning bacteria such as Enterohemorrhagic E.coli O157 and salmonella. It also exerts a bactericidal effect on spore forming bacteria which show resistance to chemical agents including disinfectants. (Fig.2)

High Safety

Strongly acidic electrolyzed water will return to normal water if it touches an organic matter. Thus, unlike other disinfectants, it has a weak toxicity and poses almost no harm to human health and the environment.
Strongly acidic electrolyzed water showed an excellent result in the various safety tests mentioned below. Therefore it is considered to be a highly safe disinfectant compared to commonly used disinfectants.

Low Running Cost

The ingredients needed to make strongly acidic electrolyzed water are only water, electricity and salt. It costs only 0.6 yen to make one liter of strongly acidic electrolyzed water. With the use of strongly acidic electrolyzed water, you can drastically reduce the running expense that was formerly required for sterilization.

  • Cleaning effect of strongly alkaline electrolyzed water

Quick Emulsification of Fats and Oils

Strongly alkaline electrolyzed water, which contains a small amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a necessary component of soap, has an ability to dissolve protein and to emulsify fats and oils (Fig.3). Hydrogen nanobubbles generated at the time of electrolysis provides a superior cleaning effect (synergy effect) by detaching the contaminant physically. Due to its capability to quickly remove a substance such as blood or mucus that is attached to the exterior of the medical equipment, the use of strongly alkaline electrolyzed water as a preliminary washing makes it easier to reach out to bacteria and further enhances the bactericidal effect of strongly acidic electrolyzed water.

Blood Stain Removal

As shown in Fig.4, strongly alkaline electrolyzed water has a strong cleaning capability to remove proteins such as blood. It can be used not only to clean an endoscope but also to remove blood stains that are attached to walls, floors or stretchers in health care facilities (treatment room, emergency room, etc.).
